About TechBiM

TechBiM is a joint sector initiative that enables digital models of technical installations to be constructed in a standardised manner.

TechBiM streamlines the design processes and realises an open ecosystem in which all parties (designers, installers, contractors, manufacturers, and partners) can collaborate on the digital twin of a building’s technical installations.

As the initiator of TechBiM, Techlink supports installation companies in their digitalisation efforts. Techlink takes another step forward by making the TechBiM Content Suite freely available to all parties in the Belgian construction industry.

History

2008: Witas launches the first version of their object library (BIM Content Layer) for the modelling of technical installations.
September 2016: commencement of Cluster BIM (WTCB)
2017: Understanding that standardisation of the BIM Content Layer is necessary for each BIM Modelling Software in order to collaborate effectively.
2018:
- Decision to move the project to open-source from a sector platform with the extensive Witas object library.
- Search for founding sponsors and supporters
- Discussion regarding the streamlining of the design processes with the users
- Establishment of the Technical Committee for Content Management and Evolution
- Organization of TechBiM Administration: Belgian federations representing BIM users: Techlink, ORI, IFMA Belgium, Confederation of Construction
24 October 2018: Presentation of TechBiM at the Digital Construction Brussels fair
23 november 2018: TechBiM Content Suite live voor stichtende sponsors op de beurs InstallDay
23 September 2019: Arkance Systems and Witas become TechBiM Certified Content Providers
22 November 2019: TechBiM Content Suite is open-source for use in projects located in Belgium

Idea & Investment

The standardisation initiative TechBiM is an idea and investment by Techlink, the professional federation for technical installation companies in Belgium, and Witas, a software and services company with expertise in BIM and MEP.

The evolution of the generic object library (TechBiM Content) is determined by the Technical Committee composed of the BIM users who have acted as Founding Sponsors.

In addition to the Founding Sponsors, representatives from the aforementioned federations and experts may be invited to participate. The Technical Committee evaluates new or modified objects submitted by individual BIM users or Certified Content Providers. Upon validation, these will be incorporated into the common library and made accessible to all. Through this co-creation, the TechBiM Community is advancing rapidly together.
